Summarize. Well the KONY 2012 video is about a terrorist named Joseph Kony. The one problem with him is that no one knows who he is. What he does is that he takes children from the parents and forces them to be in his army. He makes them shoot their parents and then attack other villages. This video is about him and what we should do.
What do you think the specific goal of the filmmaker is? I think that the core idea is that he believes its wrong. Yet i believe that the thought that hit it home for him was that he didn’t wan’t the same thing happening to his son, Gavin. He saw what kids Gavin’s age were living through and he never wanted that to happen to his son. I think he hopes to arrest Kony so that al of this will be done. Perhaps every kid he saw over in Uganda when he went over there reminded him of Gavin.
What is your personal opinion? It think the strategy is a very clever idea. No one gets hurt and any person who hears about this guy will want to do something. People will get bored with all of the blog posts and video’s etc. etc. over time! But if they do keep on showing the subject over and over again it will stay in peoples heads. They will remember. And if they try to forget all over them they will have reminders. They may be reading a magazine and they will see the name Kony. They’re eyes may just be tricking them but that will trigger something in their heads. I think that one thing i might do different is that i would keep supplies in stock. People want to buy posters and such but when they say “No, we’re out.” Then they get a little discouraged. Every person wants to feel like they’re getting something back. If you donate you may not feel satisfied. You’ll probably ask “What’s in it for me.” Getting posters or a T-shirt might give them more of an urge.
What do you think about making a bad person a celebrity? I think that it is a great idea. Having him being on TIME magazine will definitely make awareness. They know that they can’t do much without the governments support. The way to keep our troops out there is if we show that the American people are still interested. If the people loose interest then the government will. Then the whole operation will be closed done except for those few people. But they still need the governments help.
What is the difference about raising awareness and being called to action?
I think that raising awareness is where you talk to people and say “Hey have you hear about this?” I believe that being called to action is doing something about it. To me that is what it seems that they are. Raising awareness is telling people about it and then being called to action is feeling a urge and doing something about it.
What is an issue that you feel strongly about? I think that this one may be the one that has really hit me. I just feel that it is a major problem. Where it is is basically where the L.R.A are. The people who are affected by them are wherever they are. They move. It seems to me that as they move everyone in their area is affected. People should care about this because... people are dying. They are being forced to do terrible things. What we need to ask is, “What if that was me?” Then people will care. People will look at their family’s and friends and wonder “What if that was them?” I think that what we can do to help is that we can donate to the company as well as sending mail to the government. Letting them know that the people are still interested. Also what they can do is on April 20th is to go out with posters and such and just slam their entire city with the things. If we did that we would get a lot of peoples attention. If we plastered downtown Portland every business man would see it. Also the media would have a story on it as well. If we just put out a whole bunch of posters we would definitely spread the word.
